My day begins with a morning walk in the beautiful Veer Savarkar park at Akurdi in Pune. Each day the crowd varies but a few are regular for their walk like us with the same timings. They say walks or any form of exercise secretes Happy Hormones and serotonins which calm our agitated nerves and thus keep us focussed and peaceful throughout the day. Though the regulars never greet each other and there is no sign of recognition despite the fact that we have known many for years.  In the picturesque surroundings I look forward seeing a beautiful person ,a graceful old lady. This old lady who is very regular for her walks has captured my attention for days together.. While we are walking briskly calculating the calories burnt, the frail and feeble body of this lady is barely able to drag her a few steps . Clad in a clean voile sari ,her hair hanging loosely plaited on her shoulder ,with loose hard soled shoes the lady drags herself across the longest walking path greeting others with a Shri Ram or Radhe Shyam .Her smile and composure sets people to greet back and look into her serene face and smile back. All of a sudden the smile turns infectious spreading from person to person. Don't you feel we have forgotten this golden phenomena of bonding with each other.I hope we grow gracefully like this lady spreading the message of  peace and love unknowingly.

Wealth for Lakshmi

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”   ―   Mother Teresa ‘ A ayi ’  refers to m other in Marathi, but Lakshmi had graduated from a mother, to a grandmother. Her daughter and her grandchildren loved calling her ‘Aayi’ in Konkani.  She was a native of the lush green Konkan. Aayi began her life with ‘ abu ’ Jagannath in the city of warangal in Andhra Pradesh. She was a tall, healthy lady and Jaggnath a good looking, lean and handsome man. Together they made a handsome couple not only looks wis e, but also mannerism wise. Lakshmi’s family was a large one consisting of seven sisters and the youngest one was the much awaited sibling brother. Her parents were ecstatic over the birth of a boy after seven sisters. The sisters treasured their kid brother. Lakshmi and her sisters got married early owing to the social norms and customs. Lakshmi was blessed with a daughter and a son. The daughter was a replica of Jagannath, the same chisel...

A Tryst with ‘Carmbola’

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome"—   Anne Bradstreet  ‘Karmbala Torro’ is what we call it in Konkani. It is a pickle and my Mother in law pickles it wonderfully well. Whenever we visit Tiruvalla, I find bottles of these stacked to be devoured during our stay and carry  some to Pune, which lasts a few months reminding us of our visit. ‘Karambal’ is small, juicy and sour with ridges known as ‘Carmbola’ in English, commonly known as Star fruit. The   Scientific name is   Averrhoa carambola. Star fruit is a small, bushy evergreen tree that grows very well under hot, humid, tropical conditions. Carambola is native to Malayan peninsula and cultivated in many parts of Southeast Asia, Pacific islands and China for its fruits. Although abundant and plentiful, carambola is yet to gain popularity, especially in the western world.(Wikipedia)   The fruit is a...

My Red Car, My First Love on Wheels

The photograph was dated July 19, 2016. Until now, I hadn’t paid attention to either the date or the car in the picture. In fact, for years afterwards, I didn’t think much about the date at all. I hadn’t picked up my car from the showroom because I wasn’t confident in my driving skills. I had chosen a small, gleaming red coloured car— one of the older models that hadn’t been sold. It stood out, brave and shining, among the newer models that looked so sleek and proud. It seemed like the best option for a novice driver; it suited my budget and was capable of handling difficult drives and narrow parking spaces. The date of purchase coincided with the birthdate of the eminent astronomer and astrophysicist Dr Jayant Narlikar, whom we lost recently. I was recalling the memories of Dr Jayant Narlikar, but the photograph sent me down the memory lane. When I completed my Ph.D., my family and extended family expressed great appreciation. Everyone had kind words to share, but my mother-in-l...
